A river runs next to it and a lake runs through it. In Lake Oswego, with the Willamette River on the east and Oswego Lake smack in the city center, scenic views and watery backdrops are never far away.
Once a steel town with dreams of becoming the Pittsburgh of the West, Lake Oswego is a mostly residential community now – a charming suburb eight miles south of downtown Portland. Its nearly 37,000 residents are well-educated (more than 66% of adults have a bachelor’s degree or higher), predominantly professional, slightly older (median age: 45.8), and well-off (median household income, about $84,000).
Newcomers looking for a quiet, suburban community with urban amenities find Lake Oswego hard to resist. Gently rolling hills amid flat expanses of green space with mature trees beckon inner peace, along with that sparkling lake in the center of town. Plus, there are the exceptional schools, a top-rated library, graceful and historic architecture, indoor and outdoor recreation and active neighborhood associations. And the Lakewood Center of the Arts not only keeps residents entertained with a full season of musical and stage plays, but also nurtures the next generation of arts lovers through theater and arts education.
There’s a real sense of community too. Each May, volunteers hang colorful flower baskets throughout the city. This all-volunteer effort has been nationally recognized, winning the America in Bloom award in 2003. Community spirit infuses other events, such as the old-fashioned 4th of July celebration and the annual holiday tree lighting. Even the Saturday Farmers Market offers doggy daycare and a play space for kids so that no one is left out.
Friendly neighborhoods offer a tantalizing array of housing options. Like Mountain Park, for example. This nationally recognized planned community of nearly 9,000 residents sits on 700 acres in the city’s northwest corner – with nearly 175 acres left undeveloped and maintained in its natural state – and includes single-family homes, townhouses, condos and apartments.
There’s also First Addition, a neighborhood of historic homes on the city’s east side that began as shelter for “additional” workers during the iron foundry’s heyday in the 1890s. Cottage Living magazine in 2006 named First Addition one of the 10 best cottage communities in America, noting the neighborhood’s quaint homes (farmhouses, Cape Cods, bungalows) and jewel-box gardens just a stroll from downtown and Oswego Lake.
In the ‘20s, Lake Oswego was promoted as a place to “live where you play.” It’s a motto folks still swear by. The city maintains 573 acres of parks and open spaces and owns a sports center on the Willamette River; 23.7 miles of walking loops and pathways connect neighborhoods to schools, parks and the business district; and cyclists love the 14 miles of bike lanes. Want more? How about a public golf course, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, an equestrian riding club and a skate park for ‘boarders and in-line skaters. For quiet reflection, Tryon Creek State Park offers nature trails to hike or paved trails to bike; you can marvel at the trillium, listen to the blue jays or watch the steelhead trout that run through Tryon Creek.
